of the Week: Super Bowl V
AUSTIN,
Texas — After
a Week 10 loss to the Afros,
the Gridiron Gangsters stood at 4-6, had a franchise-record
four-game losing streak and the focus of the WFFL's all-time
winningest team was
shifted from the present to the future. Well, how quickly
things changed.
The Gangsters
reeled off seven consecutive wins, averaging 209
points in the process, and capped off the remarkable
turn-around by capturing their WFFL-record third Super
Bowl Championship.
The team handedly defeated the heavily-favored
Underdawgs, who entered the league title
game with a 13-game winning streak, by a whopping 84 points
(225-141).
"This is, without
a doubt, the most remarkable day of this proud franchise's
storied history," team owner Brian Hernandez said after
the convincing victory. "The other 11 owners said
it could not and would not happen. They made the mistake
of kicking us when we were down, but little did they
know, we were never out. Well, right about now all
those guys can kiss my refried-bean ass or should I
say kiss my ring?"
They
were led by a quarterback who was acquired after
a shaky
first month of the season and a misunderstood
running
back who, on draft night 2002, was given a new lease
on life. QB Daunte Culpepper scored a team-high 53.5
points and RB Ricky Williams, the league's leading
rusher, added 32, as the Gangsters easily
finished the season at the spot
that every owner dreams to be: the top
of the mountain.
Now the pursuit for
championship No. 4 begins immediately as the team prepares
for the 2003 draft and decides which quarterback, running
back and receiver will have the honor of remaining with
the squad next season. Rumors have WR Terrell Owens joining
Culpepper
and
Williams
among the lucky three. Stay tuned for the latest developments.
